Alec Soth's Blog: Where fawning sycophants reign

I am a huge fan of Soth's work but do not understand why his blog gets so much attention . Am I the only one tired of reading all his fans chiming in on what a genius he is and how he feeds into it.
And while we are on the Soth rant what is up with photographing his own schlong in the Niagara book?
Do we will really need to see his gear in order for him to have cred as an artist?

Yes the Bitter Photographer is just jealous of Soth's popularity but that doesn't mean he is wrong.

When I saw his show for the Deutche Bourse prize I thought it was good, OK, fine. I have loads of photo buddies who regularly bang out moody empty interiors (or dopey middle-American kitsch) for travel mags and personal gloom. The portraits are another thing. Some very nice. But I had a thought that if it were not for "Charles" the supernova would not have happened. That is a fucking great image — because of Charles.

Ha, funny and straight up. I check out his blog quite regularly but I'm still not sure why. Soth seldoms post images (the real reason I keep visiting), his insight into photography is often bland and his poems rot. Bitter is better.

fellows:
soth is a good guy who loves photography and is very generous in sharing his insights. his blog is popular because it has a good vibe, is smart, and isn't really focused on tearing things down and spreading negativity. i think you all are jealous of the blog's super popularity, but you must admit that the guy is putting out a quality blog product....he is doing homework, not just dissing people. he isn't responsible for the legions of followers that have irked you all...so just chill please and let someone have a good blog.
peace,

TA

Alec Soth's blog is popular because he talks candidly and insightfully about photography and art. Duh, idiot.

But that "Friday Poem" thing is totally gay, and even has its copiers, some dude doing "Monday Poem" on another blog.

While the BP did not actually attend the Yale University MFA program he was able to learn a little about deconstruction at the photography trade school he almost graduated from.

Let's take a minute and look at a recent post from Mr Soth. Aside from that incredibly long and tedious poem recently posted (which no one will read ) there seems to be a discussion of all the people in the world who happen to look like Mr Soth.

While BP spent most of high school either getting stoned in the woods or trying to imagine each of the girls in his class naked he does have a vague recollection from Psych 101 of a certain psychological ailment known as Narcissism.

While there appears to be no end to the number of people interested in riffing on this dopplegangler discussion , the Bitter Photographer would like to direct Mr Soth and his sycophants to MySpace where these "candid and insighful"conversations might be better appreciated.

BP, I'll have to lend my voice to yours, unfortunately.
Timothy, you can't possibly be objective after he guy invited you to speak. So shut the $*%$&%2 up!

Soth is the american Howdy Doody of photography. Sure is work is nice but nothing transformative, original or worthy of the hype he receives. He is the perfect storm of good PR and thoughtless optimism, and I freaking hate it. To my eyes, that's how W and the Gipper got elected. Be earnest, well meaning and you shall conquer the masses.
How does it go again: "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". I'll take intelligent criticism and skepticism any day, misguided optimism has lead this country to complete and utter intellectual erectile disfunctionality.

I am not sure that I wrote two insightful entries on Mr Alec Soth's blog and his work but here they are:

“Ken, Alec, with this ring, I wed thee”….Posted Oct 1st.
"Das Kinder Blob"….Posted June 4

I feel like calling myself the bitterrer photographer, or do you have that cornered.

yeah, soth's blog readers are fucking lame. i visited it when it was a newer site, and enjoyed it, but it became a shrine of soth worship and i couldn't take it.

i've no prob with soth. maybe sometimes he drops a bone that will obviously get them fired up to rebolster his ego.

but i'd probably do the same.

America has always been fascinated with "the next big thing". Face it, there is no Strand, Weston, or Evans waiting in the wings.

So Soth is the next best thing? Give me a break. Be patient, eventually the real thing will come along and then everyone will jump off the bandwagon.

The best photograph, the most famous photographer, all blahh blahh. the most wonderful Friday poem! The most boring Sunday song. Take a look at the Harvey blog, same fucking lame readers and Mr. Harvey plays the super-photographer.

Interesting circle jerk you have going amongst your own sycophants. At least Soth has credibility. You and yours are nothing but jealous hacks I presume?
